Why we can't have nice things.

We fuck up everything.

Relationships. Politics. Sport. Business. Religion.

The Environment.

Every damn thing we do. We have fucked it up somehow.

Because Greed and Jealousy and Intolerance are actively encouraged by very influential people, sometimes by force, other times by trickery, lies & deceit. 

We really are despicable creatures.

And some of you will spout about Art and Love and Kindness and the Beauty of blah blah blah, but none of that will stop what's going to happen. The sum total of all our marvelous achievements as dominant species will not stop the coming apocalypse, which is our most disastrous achievement: The Destruction of our own habitat, without which we cannot live. The collapse of civilization and the death of billions of people, in mostly unpleasant ways.

Look at what we've done. We ought to be ashamed of ourselves. We're such selfish creatures, and spiteful and inconsiderate. Greedy.

We can't just live with Nature, we have to 'tame' it, aka 'ruin' it. 

We have to take more than we need. Greedy.

We have ruined every good thing that ever existed or that we have devised here on this planet. 

Religion? 

Oh, let's take this message of love and unity and use it to subjugate millions 

& turn us against each other for 'not doing it right'.

Every time.

Nature's Bounty?

Let's enslave it and force it to yield far more than we need so we can hoard stuff and withhold it from people to have power over them, ignoring that this enslavement, carried to extreme, will ultimately lead to degradation and thus loss of fertility.

Every time.

Families?

Let's take this joyous warmth of gathering with those close to us & turn it into a rigid, externally defined prison, or club with which we define 'us' and 'them' and make whoever is not 'us' our enemy.

Every time.

And so, over 10,000 years in which humans have been ascendant and then dominant, we have managed to create our own destruction. 

And now we are allowing it to happen.

I am so disheartened today.   I just watched a video made by a Pennsylvania state legislator, a Democrat, who'd just found out that the Republican leadership had been calling committee meetings for weeks, forcing the legislators and their support staff to come in close contact with a person who had tested positive for Covid-19. They have all the guns.....

Last night I was telling Grace my fears that some of these Governors might feel the need to call out the National Guard to deal with these protesters.  I was heading to my concern that with Trump backing the protesters, this could lead to civil war, but she interrupted me before I got there. I'm paraphrasing here: "Who do the Guard report to?" she said, "Is it Trump?" "No," I said, "They are essentially a state militia. They report to the Governor." "Oh," she said. The Least Uncomfortable Position

Was thinking about plane travel. Long plane travel, when you're stuck in an airplane full of people, perhaps in a middle seat, for like 20+ hours. For me, this is horrendous. The noise, the crowd, the limited space for movement… it is just this side of physical torture. In order to survive that and not have panic attacks, I have to shut down large parts of my brain. I have to find the least uncomfortable position.  Because there is no comfortable position. None.  All positions are uncomfortable. The entire ordeal from walking into the airport to walking out at the destination is one long uncomfortable position.   So I shut down major portions of my consciousness. Develop tunnel vision. Lock away all feelings that aren't physical, and do my best to dampen those as well. That's the least uncomfortable position, soul-wise. And then I work to find the least uncomfortable physical position as well.   I do not think about how much I want to get out of that plane....
