Letter to a Dead Friend
Dear Debbie,
You would not believe what's going on here. It's insanity! It's crazy! I haven't been out of the house in over a month, except for going to the grocery store every week and to the park once or twice. Really, we all have to stay inside and wear masks when we go out and people are dying right and left and the President......omg, Debbie, I'm afraid to tell you: The President of the United States is Donald Trump!
Yes THAT Donald Trump! And he's even worse that you could imagine. I mean; Imagine the most embarrasing thing you could think of for a POTUS to do. Got it?
This happens EVERY DAY! He comes up with a new embarrassment EVERY DAY!
Every. Frikkin.' Day. For three and a half years!
So what it is is; The Coronavirus! AKA Covid-19. over 3 MILLION cases in the world now. And thanks to DT the US Leads The World in Cases and deaths! Yes, it's true! Close to a third of that 3 Million is in the US.
It started in China, they say at a Wet Market in Wuhan, although conspiracy theories abound. (It was the US Military, the Russians, accidental Chinese lab release, intentional Chinese lab release, all the usual suspects) and after a fumbling start the CCP locked down Wuhan and surrounds, and anywhere else it was cropping up, and got it under control fairly quickly. But by that time a lot of travelers had left for the rest of the world.
Some countries acted fast, like South Korea and Singapore, and were able to keep a lid on the infection rate, but some places, notably Italy and Spain in Europe, and the Good Ol' USA, did not act soon enough. Trump was even telling everyone there was nothing to worry about, that it was all under control. Then all hell broke loose.
Man, what a shit show, Debbie, you would not believe! Trump's telling people to drink disinfectant, saying that people should be wearing masks, but not really. He's not going to wear one. He's left all the states to fend for themselves, shown favoritism to Red states over Blue, feuded with Dem Governors, blocked aid, ignored all the experts.....
Get this Debbie: He closed the organization Obama set up to combat infectious diseases! Fired the people responsible! Ignored Intelligence Reports from our own agencies that said this would be a big problem. (While Senators who also heard those reports were quietly selling stock before the crash).
He's also failed entirely to be presidential at this time. He offers no condolences to the families of those who've died.No calm presence to reassure us that everything possible is being done. Takes credit for anything that goes right and denies responsibility for everything that's going wrong. He's blaming others. Blathering conflicting information. Contradicting his own people tasked with leading us through this.
And meanwhile, over 20 million people have been laid off across the country in the space of 3 weeks! More people are being laid off as we speak. The emergency measures that the house and senate have passed have given more $ to corporations and the wealthy than to all the folks out of work. He is actively encouraging people to defy the stay-at-home orders, for Christ's sake! So of course there are idiots who are!
See, here's the thing. They're still working out how the virus is transmitted, so far it seems mostly thru droplets in the air and direct contact with those who have the disease. The problem is there are asymptomatic people out there walking around. They don't know they have it. They're not affected by it. But they can pass it on to someone else who could die.
Cuz this is a virus that kills people. People who are vulnerable, seems to be mostly old folks above 60 (bad news for us) who have other conditions, but also reports of younger folks down to children whose lungs are filling up with congestion and then they need to be on a ventilator, tube down the throat kinda thing. Once you're there, the majority of you die.
As of today over 56,000 people have died from this in the US. By this time tomorrow it'll be more than the number of US soldiers killed in Vietnam.
New York City and surrounds have the highest number of cases by far. The West Coast states started seeing cases early and took action in early to mid-March. CA Gov. Newsome told 65's and older to stay home as of the 15th, the Bay Area told everyone to stay home on the 17th and the entire state on the 21st. I got laid off on the 20th of March, btw. Luckily one of the emergency packages included boosting everyone's unemployment by 600/week.
But it also gave $70 Billion to big, publicly traded companies. The whole financial thing has been such a fiasco. As usual it's the small and medium sized businesses that suffer the most, and their employees. Not to mention all the gig economy folks, who are struggling to figure out how to apply for unemployment.
And the confirmed cases just keep going up, 20 to 30k cases a day. Every day since the end of March the cases rise by about the same amount. Yet Republicans and Corporations are pushing for everyone to get back to work! And recruiting the usual cretins to support them by congregating in front of the state house or governor's office, often with guns and confederate flags.
They just don't give a shit if people die. People die all the time they say.
And don't get me started on the DNC.
